What Was I Thinking?

Last week Macy announced she would like to sleep in a big girl bed. This move has been in the back of my mind for a while but she was not interested and we had a really good thing going. Seven o'clock would hit, she would happily (most of the time) get in her crib, we would zip her up and that would be it until I heard her calling me around eight the next morning. If she did wake up in the night upset I would just go in and calm her, start her iPod and go back to sleep. Pretty good right?

Well, turns out that I am an idiot. When Macy showed interest in a big girl bed I went right along. It has not gone smoothly. Last night I thought victory was mine when she was asleep by eight with only one intervention. Hahaha! Macy woke up at 1:30 and jabbered until 5:30. She was saying the funniest things and making up great songs making it hard to keep saying no more talking. But we are tired. The only thing that keeps me from putting the crib back up is how much fun I am having redecorating her room.

Here is where I beg for your help. What worked for you? Do you think it is bad to keep a child in a crib with a tent until they are 18?

I thought the exact same thing when we first moved to our new house and moved Maddy to a bed. It was a rough couple of weeks but then slowly she actually slept better than she did in her crib. Maddy has been waking up at 5 am. so I made a morning basket for her room. I filled it with books, toys, etc and I told her that when the sun is up she can play with her toys in her bed until I come get her. Remarkable it has worked pretty well. Another thing you could do is play soft music all night and see if when she wakes up it will lull her back to sleep, if that doesn't work, then my next suggestion is a benadryl drip....and a nap for you!!!

I left Bud and Rosie in cribs until they were almost 4 years old. Rosie's friends at preschool could not believe she still slept in a crib. Coleman was just over 3 when he moved to a bed. Macy will get it. My advice is Tough Love! Think to yourself, "I can do it! I can do it!"

I think my favorite part about this post is "I go in and turn her ipod back on." Love it!

We had the same issue with Kiara for the first 3 or 4 nights and I remember asking myself the same thing (she never even mentioned a big girl bed, I was just anxious to see how it went). Eventually she got used to it though and has been fine ever since.

I have seen several episodes of Super Nanny though (don't judge me!) where she says the first time they get up, tell them flatly that it's time for bed, kiss them good night and then lay them back down and walk out of the room. The second time they get up you just tell them again it's time for bed and lay them back down. Every time after that you don't say a word, just lay them back down and walk out, without giving any other reaction. Every time she tries it on the show it seems to work so maybe it's worth a shot (if you can be that tough while she's being so cute and funny!).

I don't really have any advice, but I hope she gets used to it soon. Not getting enough sleep is horrible. I can't wait to see her new room when you are done!
